Fictionkin, or fictionkind, refers to an otherkin subtype in which someone identifies as a fictional character, creature, or species. Those who are fictionkin oftentimes consider themselves to also be otherkin, but this is not always the case. Formerly, the term fictionkin was sometimes called mediakin.
The reasons for why someone is fictionkin can vary, with beliefs often being spiritual or psychological in origin. Some fictionkin individuals believe they are a reincarnation of their kintype, and this is often justified using the multiverse theory. Others may have a psychological connection with their kintype, believing that it is in some way tied to their brain and/or neurodivergence.
Fictionkin is thought to have started as a separate community called otakukin during the early 2000s. Consequently, the earliest use of the term fictionkin comes from the From Fiction LiveJournal created in 2004.[1] Because of this, other labels for the term faded out of common usage, while sites like fictionkin.net were used throughout the 2010s.[2]
Terminology[edit | edit source]
Like with otherkin, the identity(s) that a fictionkin individual identifies as are called kintypes, however more recently fictionkin identities may be called fictotypes. Those that are fictionkin may have shifts or other related phenomenons.
